    Interesting Facts

Just some weird facts about some foods..... 1. Coconut water can be used (in emergencies) as a substitute for blood plasma. The reason for this is that coconut water (the water found in coconuts - not to be confused with coconut milk, which comes from the flesh of the coconut) is sterile and has an ideal pH level. Coconut water is liquid endosperm - it surrounds the embryo and provides nutrition. 2. Dynamite is made with peanutsPeanut oil can be processed to produce glycerol, which can be used to make nitroglycerin, one of the constituents of dynamite. Note however, there are other processes that can be used to make dynamite without using peanuts at all. 3. Microwave cooking was discovered accidentally when a chocolate bar melted in someone’s pocketThis is very true and very scary - imagine what it was doing to his leg! The fact is, Percy LeBaron Spencer of the Raytheon Company was walking past a radar tube and he noticed that the chocolate bar in his pocket melted. He then tested popcorn in front of the tube (surely turning up the power and standing out of the beam), and it quickly popped all over the room. He is (obviously) known as the inventor of the Microwave oven. 4. The Popsicle was invented by an 11 year who kept it secret for 18 years. The inventor was Frank Epperson who, in 1905, left a mixture of powdered soda and water out on the porch, which contained a stir stick. That night, temperatures in San Francisco reached record low temperature. When he woke the next morning, he discovered that it had frozen to the stir stick, creating a fruit flavored ice treat that he named the epsicle. 18 years later he patented it and called it the Popsicle. 5. Worcestershire sauce is made from dissolved fishWorcestershire sauce, the popular English sauce, is made from dissolved anchovies. The anchovies are soaked in vinegar until they have completely melted. The sauce contains the bones and all. 6. Refried beans are only fried onceThe reason for this misconception is a translation error. The originals are frijoles refritos which actually means “well fried beans” - not re-fried. 7. The first soup was made of hippopotamusThe earliest archeological evidence for the consumption of soup dates back to 6000 BC and it was hippopotamus soup! 8. The FDA allows you to sell bugs and rodent hair for consumptionThe FDA allows an average of 30 or more insect fragments and one or more rodent hairs per 100 grams of peanut butter. I will certainly think twice before buying my next jar! 9. The largest food item on a menu is roast camelThe camel is stuffed with a sheep’s carcass, which is stuffed with chickens, which are stuffed with fish, which are stuffed with eggs. This feast is sometimes featured in Bedouin weddings. 10. The most expensive coffee in the world comes from civet poopKopi Luwak are coffee beans that come from Civet (a cat sized mammal) poo. The animals gorge on only the finest ripe berries, and excrete the partially-digested beans, which are then harvested for sale. Kopi Luwak is the most expensive coffee in the world, selling for between $120 and $600 USD per pound, and is sold mainly in Japan and United States, but it is increasingly becoming available elsewhere. My question is: who the hell discovered that it tasted good?

    Fact Or Crap......

Crap....It was a gang of brothers, but not Frank and Jesse James. It was Frank, John, Simon, Clinton, and William Reno who did the deed in Seymour, Indiana, making off with $10,000. Soon after, Allan Pinkerton arrested John and put him behind bars for 40 years, but Frank and the rest of the brothers continued robbing trains and banks. Pinkerton and his men eventually tracked down and imprisoned the Renos, but a mob of 56 men, incensed by the Renos' crimes, broke into Indiana's New Albany jail on December 12, 1868, and hung the men from the rafters. Fact or Crap: Schizophrenia costs U.S. taxpayers $4 billion a year.

    Fact Or Crap......

Crap...For decades, the 1854 speech that Cheif Seattle supposedly delivered to Governor Isaac Stevens, who was trying to buy Puget Sound, has been a rallying cry for environmentalists everywhere. Seattle supposedly said, "We are part of the earth, and it is part of us." The problem is, the aging cheif spoke no English, and no one present spoke Duwamish, his native tongue. And since Seattle never left Puget Sound, he had never seen a buffalo, much less a train. German historian Rudolf Kaiser tracked down the source of the bogus speech to a screenwriter named Ted Perry who "rewrote" it for a television documentary. Fact or Crap: The first U.S. train robbery, on October 6, 1866, was pulled off by the James gang.

Crap...Peter Wolf was once maried to Faye Dunaway. It was not his only brush with Hollywood royalty. At Boston's School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Wolf's roomate was David Lynch, later the director of Blue Velvet and the television show Twin Peaks. However, Lynch found Wolf "strange" and kicked him out. It was Lynch who, years later, had a highly publicized affair with Isabella Rossellini, the daughter of Ingrid Bergman and Italian director Roberto Rossellini. Fact or Crap: In Chief Seattle's famous 1854 speech advocating ecological responsibility, he said, "I have seen five million rotting buffaloes on the prarie, left by the white man who shot them from a passing train."

Crap....A brilliant military strategist, Ghengis Khan unified the Mongol tribes and cut a bloody swath across Asia, killing all who defied him. Aristocrats were systematically executed, which is why he is credited with replacing aristocracy with meritocracy. But he spared artists, writers, and language specialists. By A.D. 1225, Khan's empire stretched across China to Russia, Afghanistan, Persia and Northern India. He introduced the alphabet, the abacus, the compass, and a postal system, and is credited with outlawing torture, exempting teachers and doctors from taxes and establishing freedom of religion. Fact or Crap: Peter Wolf, lead singer of the J. Geils Band, was once married to Isabella Rossellini.

Fact....One hundred Hawaiian toads were introduced to brisbane in 1935. With each female laying strings of 35,000 eggs twice a year, and with no known predators, they grew to more than 60,000 in less than 6 months. Aussies have been battling their proliferation for decades. Growing as large as 10 inches and 6 pounds, cane toads are able to shoot poison up to 3 feet that is toxic, if swallowed, even to humans. With a taste for snakes and mice, they have decimated Australian wildlife, but ironically, these picky eaters never took a liking to the beetles they had been brought in to control. Fact or Crap: Genghis Khan, ruthless chief of the Mongol horde, wiped out art and culture throughout Asia.

CRAP.....Since the strands of DNA in one human cell stretch to almost 6 feet, if all the DNA in your body were put end to end, it would reach the Sun and back over 600 times (100 trillion cells times 6 feet divided my 93 million miles). Fact or Crap: The cane toads that are invading Queensland, Australia, were introduced by man to control beetles that were destroying sugarcane crops. woohoo....look at me go....finally reached 100 posts!!! Crap...."Antifreeze" proteins are what keep the more than 120 marine fish species called Notothenioids from freezing. The protein binds with ice crystals in their bloodstream and inhibits their growth. Most fish would die without these proteins, as temperature of water in the Antarctic (28 degrees F) is below freezing point of their blood. Fact or Crap: If all the DNA in your body were put end to end, it would be one and a half football (US football)Â fields long.

Crap....Kissing Brett was possibly the most famous moment for the busty Morganna Roberts, but the first kiss she stole was from Pete Rose in 1971. Egged on by a dare from a friend, she jumped out of the stands at Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium to plant a smack on "Charlie Hustle." Rose swore at the 60-23-39 exotic dancer, but called her the next day and apologized. She went on to kiss nearly two-dozen Major League players. Fact or Crap: The marine fish species that live in Antarctic waters are the only warm-blooded fish in existence, which is how they keep from freezing.

Crap...The stirrup appeared in China in the first few centuries A.D., a surprisingly late date considering man had ridden horses as early as 10,000 B.C. In Europe, it's first documented use was in the 6th century during the rul of Charles Martel. Some historians believe that medieval feudalism would not have spread without this Chinese invention, as it allowed men to brace and attack with lances and swords, making knights and cavalry nearly invincible. Fact or Crap: Despite a day on Saturn being equivalent to 10 Earth hours, a Saturnian year is about 29.5 Earth years.

Crap....In the 1905 football season, 18 men lost their lives and 159 were permanently injured in American college football games. During that era, football players wore little or no protective gear. Punching, kicking, gouging, and linking arms were all part of the game. One quarter of all games ended in mob brawls. The shocking number of deaths and injuries that year prompted President Theodore Roosevelt to establish the National Collegiate Athletic Association, which instituted regulations designed to make college football less lethal. Fact or Crap: Since 1976, there have been 273 people executed in the United States.

Dodges are okay too...never had a problem with them. I just happen to own two Chevy's right now, an '81 Z28 Camaro and an '88 Blazer (fullsize) And I would LOVE a Pontiac Firebird (the last year they made) but the one I want is very specific and I probably won't ever be able to afford one anyway....So I stick with my old Chevy's that I never have problems with!!

Fortunately for us, the cells in the stomach lining renew so quickly that the acids don’t have time to dissolve it 2. The lungs contain over 300,000 million capillaries (tiny blood vessels). If they were laid end to end, they would stretch 2400km (1500 miles). 3. A man’s testicles manufacture 10 million new sperm cells each day - enough that he could repopulate the entire planet in only 6 months! 4. Human bone is as strong as granite in supporting weight. Fact....Johan Bessler, 32, a native of Zittau, Saxony, amazed the world when he unveiled a 3-foot-diameter wheel that, with a slight push, turned at 24-26 rpm indefinitely without any visible assistance. The belligerent and paranoid Bessler, who later referred to himself as "Orrfyreus," refused to reveal the wheel's secret and so was dismissed as fraud. For the next 18 years, Bessler built larger wheels-up to 12 feet in diameter- that also passed rigorous testing, but Bessler took the secret to his grave. The physics of the Bessler wheel is still debated. Fact or Crap: In the first decade of the 20th century, football (american) was considered a genteel activity for the upper class only.
